What to Expect

Requesting Food

The Pitt Pantry is offering no-contact pickup of pre-packaged boxes or the option to shop-through the Pitt Pantry in-person. For either option, you must submit this online request form by Wednesdays at 2 PM. In the form, you will indicate your preference for pick-up or shop-through, and select either an appointment time or pick-up window.

This online form takes the place of our regular sign-in process. You will need to fill it out every time you request food; however, you will not be prompted to answer all of the questions when it is your second visit of the month. You will fill out your name, 2P number, and whether it is your first or second visit of the month for each request. You can also update any dietary requirements/preferences that may have changed with each current submission. Note that specific preferences cannot be accommodated for due to limitations on availability. We will try our best to meet your dietary requirements and provide foods that you can safely eat.  Please note that the form will not allow you to submit while any row is blank. For the rows that don’t apply to you or your household, please enter “0”. If you encounter any problems while filling out the form please email pantry@pitt.edu.

Once completed, you will be able to come pick up your box at your scheduled pick-up time or you will be able to shop-through during your designated appointment time. Please read the following sections for information regarding pick-up location and safety procedures for pick-up and shop-through.

Returning Shoppers

You may request a food/item box or Pantry visit up to twice a month by submitting the online form for each request. There is a section on the form where you can indicate if this is your first or second time requesting food for a given month. The same procedures apply. (Please consult the below section for information regarding procedures).

Picking Up Prepackaged Boxes

Note that all pick-ups will be no-contact to ensure the safety of our shoppers, staff, and community. Our staff and volunteers will be wearing face masks, and you are also encouraged to wear masks and maintain social distancing rules when near others. During the pick-up window that you select on the form, your box will be available to be picked-up on the Thackeray Avenue side porch of Bellefield Presbyterian Church. Please try to arrive as close as to the time that you select on the form. Upon your arrival, look for the last four digits of your 2P number written on your box. If you are unable to pick up your box during the timeslot you selected, please let us know by emailing pantry@pitt.edu. At the end of each day, all unclaimed boxes will be repacked for future use. Additionally, boxes may be heavy, so please plan accordingly. We suggest bringing a suitcase, backpack, or durable bags to help make the items easier to transport. If you plan on driving to pick-up your items, you can park in the visitor parking spot to the right of the porch.

If for any reason you do not want to keep some of your items, you can donate your unwanted and unopened items during pick-up. Please place any unwanted items in the box labeled “donations” on the porch. These items will be repurposed the following week.

Shopping-Through the Pantry

Shop-through times will be held in 15-minute intervals on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-7 PM. Our staff and volunteers will be wearing masks, and you are also required to wear masks within the Pantry. Upon arrival, you will be asked to show your Pitt ID, and a volunteer or staff member will confirm your appointment time. You may bring a maximum of one additional person with you to shop-through. For the time being, you have the option of shopping-through on your own or with the assistance of a guide. We encourage you to bring your own bags or utilize the boxes provided at the Pantry.

Advance Choice Produce Days

The Pantry is going to resume Advance Choice Produce Days with a few modifications to ensure safety during pick-up. Produce will be available every Tuesday evening from the hours of 2:00-5:00 PM in the Bellefield Presbyterian Church back parking area. You can access the parking lot either by walking up the church steps from Fifth Avenue and going to the right, or by turning left off of Thackeray between the yellow posts. To pick-up produce, you do not need an appointment. There is also no limit to the number of times that you can pick-up produce per month; feel free to come every week! You are allowed to take as many bags of produce as you would like for most items. Certain ‘popular’ items may be limited to ensure that everyone has a chance to take some home. Any produce that isn’t distributed on Tuesdays will be made available during Wednesday and Thursday distribution hours while supplies last.

Foods and Household Items to Expect Inside the Boxes

Please note that the relative quantities and distribution of food items in your box is dependent on their availability during the week of your request. Additionally, each household will receive one of each hygiene/household item (if indicated on the form) depending on if the items requested are available during the week of your request. (The form should reflect the relative availability of these products for the upcoming week).
