Arts by Pittsburgh Neighborhood

Downtown and the Cultural District: The Cultural District is located in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, encompassing over a half-dozen galleries, eight public parks and art installations, 47 restaurants, and five world-class theaters. Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Public Theater, and Pittsburgh Symphony all make their homes in the Cultural District, along with performances by the Pittsburgh Opera and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. South Side: Art happenings abound on the South Side! This diverse neighborhood revolves around a historic yet funky ten-block stretch of East Carson Street. Pittsburgh’s lauded City Theatre and Silver Eye Center for Photography call the South Side home. On or nearby East Carson Street, you can also find many smaller commercial galleries, music lounges, such as Club Cafe, and more than 30 eateries and pubs. North Side: A patchwork of smaller neighborhoods, the North Side is home to many unique attractions. Take a stroll through the Mexican War Streets and visit the Mattress Factory Museum of installation art, or experience pop art at the singular Andy Warhol Museum.

Named for the Pulitzer-prize winning playwright August Wilson, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center is a multi-purpose venue featuring three art galleries, live performance spaces, meeting areas, and unique educational classrooms for the young and old alike. Designed by renowned architect Allison Williams, the AWAACC is both a visually iconic landmark welcoming visitors to the eastern entrance of the Cultural District and a beacon of cultural excellence for the global arts community.

The mission of the AWAACC is to own and operate a home for the arts, storytelling, learning and exchange around the African American experience and the rich culture of the African diaspora. We are guided by the enduring truths and essential values evident in the work of August Wilson.

Calliope is one of the only organizations in western Pennsylvania dedicated to promoting and preserving traditional and contemporary folk music. Chatham Baroque plays music of the 17th and 18th centuries on period instruments. Its lively interpretations, stylistic innovation and dazzling technique transport audiences from the elegant French court of Louis XIV to the taverns of England, from the Scottish highlands to the exquisite palaces of Peru. Founded in 1990, the ensemble Chatham Baroque consists of Artistic Directors Andrew Fouts (violin), Patricia Halverson (viola da gamba), and Scott Pauley (theorbo & baroque guitar) who invite an array of guest instrumentalists and vocalists for productions of world-class early music performed on period instruments. The group holds a concert series in Pittsburgh, lends its expertise in collaborative productions with other arts organizations, and tours nationally and internationally.

Since 1969, the Renaissance & Baroque concert series has brought distinguished early music artists and ensembles from across the country and around the world to perform in Pittsburgh. This concert series spans approximately 1000 years of music from the Medieval period to the Classical period, and the performances range in size from solo recitals to baroque orchestras.

Since 1987, MCG Jazz has brought audiences together with jazz artists at its 350 seat music hall in Pittsburgh for innovative four-day performances and recordings. Many of these international masters of jazz would headline a list of jazz's "needs no introduction"—Joe Williams, Billy Taylor, Dizzy Gillespie, Stanley Turrentine, and Ray Brown. The performance series, one of the oldest in the nation, is an anchor of Pittsburgh cultural and community life.

Manchester Craftsmen's Guild is a multi-discipline, minority-directed center for arts and learning that employs the visual and performing arts to foster a sense of accomplishment and hope in the urban community. MCG provides a broad spectrum of visual arts experiences in its gallery space on the North Side. An annual schedule of exhibitions, lectures, workshops and residencies promotes creative and cultural discovery by connecting diverse accomplished artists to young people and their communities. Most exhibitions and lectures are offered free to the public.

Jonathan Eaton, artistic director of the Opera Theater SummerFest, calls for everyone to, “leave the opera glasses and black tie at home.” Performing all productions in English, the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh isn’t your grandmother’s opera. Everything from the American musical The Fantasticks to the world’s first eco-opera is fair game during Opera Theater’s SummerFest. Audiences can expect the unexpected as new and old works are performed in intimate spaces rather than large concert halls. Housed by the exquisite Twentieth Century Club in Oakland, Opera Theater SummerFest provides opera right on campus! This three week-long festival employs artists with strong international and American credits and is the only classically-based summer festival in Western Pennsylvania. Organ Artists Series

Student tickets are $2 at the door or $8 for a series subscription. Adult single tickets are $12 at the door or $36 for a series subscription. Ticket price includes complimentary reception and light hors d'oeuvres afterward.

Concerts are typically scheduled for late Sunday afternoon and last about an hour and a half including an intermission. Dress is casual, there's time to chat at intermission and it's great to munch after at the reception and chat with the performer. Please see the web site for the current season schedule.

The Organ Artists Series of Pittsburgh has presented world-renowned organists in concert at stunning venues in the Pittsburgh area for over 30 years. These concerts are often presented near the Oakland/Shadyside areas in such locations as Heinz Memorial Chapel or Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland, Calvary Episcopal Church or Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Shadyside or East Liberty Presbyterian Church. All of these locations are known for their outstanding instruments and unique acoustics.

The Pittsburgh Camerata, under the direction of Rebecca A. Rollett, is a professional chamber choir dedicated to performances of sacred and secular music distinguished by imaginative programming in intimate settings. Founded in 1974, the group specializes in the entire choral repertory with a unique focus on renaissance, baroque, and 20th-century works. The ensemble’s ongoing activities include a ten-concert public subscription series presented throughout the greater Pittsburgh area.

The Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society was founded in 1961 by a group of civic leaders, including such distinguished individuals as Mrs. Paul G. Benedum, Henry J. Heinz II, Mrs. Lincoln Maazel and Maestro William Steinberg, who wanted local audiences to hear the world’s finest chamber music artists perform in Pittsburgh.

Since then, PCMS has presented an annual concert series featuring the most celebrated ensembles of our time (like the Budapest, Juilliard, Guarneri, Tokyo, Emerson and Cleveland Quartets, the Beaux Arts Trio and Pablo Casals Trio, to name a few). Since 1946, the Pittsburgh CLO has been the driving force behind live musical theater in this city and the entire Southwestern Pennsylvania region. From its beginnings at Pitt Stadium to the Melody Tent, Mellon Arena, Heinz Hall, and now the beautiful Benedum Center for the Performing Arts, the CLO is unsurpassed in bringing the best of Broadway to Pittsburgh. Students from all over the University participate in musical activities and performances, and are often joined in the ensembles by faculty and members of the community at large. Several ensembles make recordings and take part in tours to foreign countries.

The ensembles perform a wide variety of music, including western art music, jazz, folk music, popular music, and music of non-western cultures.

The Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble is one of the nation's oldest professional ensembles devoted to the music of our time. Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble's summer festival presents new music in a way you won't encounter anywhere else. If you think you don't like modern music, or if you're bored with the same-old, same-old concert routine, you'll find something here to entice and inspire you.

Performances include world premieres of new works and concentrates on music written in the last 10 years. Programs are designed to flow without breaks or pauses, so that even set changes are part of the concert experience. Spoken word, visual projections, lighting, and staging combine to create an integrated artistic and sensory experience found nowhere else in the world of contemporary art.

Founded in Pittsburgh in 1981, River City Brass is modeled on the British-style brass band with 25 brass players and 3 percussionists. This configuration allows the band to present a sweeping repertoire: Big Band swing and jazz, favorites from Broadway and Hollywood, traditional marches, classical masterpieces, and original compositions. Now in its 34th season, the band is the most active professional brass band in the United States. In addition to its annual 35-concert series pressented in Western Pennsylvania, River City Brass tours extensively throughout the U.S. performing as part of community concert series, major symphony pops series, and arts festivals.

River City Brass concerts are casual and fun, with an extensive variety of music complemented by music director James Gourlay's witty commentary. RCB performs regularly in five venues around Pittsburgh, including Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland.

City Theatre is one of Pittsburgh's premiere arts institutions, providing an artistic home for the development and production of contemporary plays of substance and ideas that engage and challenge diverse audiences. It has been called Pittsburgh's most adventuresome theater.

City Theatre’s facilities include the 270-seat mainstage, the 100-seat Lester Hamburg Studio, and the Charles Morris Building, which houses rehearsal halls, and costume, prop, and paint shops. In 2004 City Theatre purchased a former steel rolling plant across from the theater that more than doubles available space. In the coming years the land will be developed, first for theatre parking, and then for uses still to be determined.

Kelly Strayhorn Theater (KST) is a leading presenter of new and provocative theater, music, dance, and interdisciplinary art. Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company was founded by Mark Clayton Southers in 2003. It began as the resident company of Garfield's Penn Theater, and moved to a 75-seat space at 542 Penn Avenue in the downtown Cultural District in January 2005. Quantum Theatre produces international contemporary plays and adaptations of classic works. The theater has developed a hallmark style through its unusual assemblage of artists and unique take on performance environment. Performers, directors, and designers come from around the world, and the company produces its plays all over the city, but never in theaters. Abandoned factories, stone-walled basements, warehouses, pump houses, museums, defunct breweries, and turn-of-the-century office towers have become home to works by William Shakespeare, Jean Cocteau, Tom Stoppard, Robert Lepage, and new voices such as David Harrower, Helen Edmundson, and Abi Morgan.

The Warhol is a lively and changing museum where you can visit to see the work of Andy Warhol. Highlights of the collection include the Silver Clouds installation, celebrity portraits, early commercial design work, and archival material from Warhol's life and times.

Every Friday there is an event called Good Fridays for a more social experience at The Warhol when they feature bands, films, DJs and other activities.

The museum is just across the 7th Street Bridge from downtown Pittsburgh and one block from PNC Park.

Manchester Craftsmen's Guild is a multi-discipline, minority-directed center for arts and learning that employs the visual and performing arts to foster a sense of accomplishment and hope in the urban community. MCG provides a broad spectrum of visual arts experiences in its gallery spaces on the North Side and downtown Pittsburgh. The Mattress Factory is an internationally renowned museum of contemporary art that commissions, exhibits, and collects site-specific installations. One of the few museums of its kind anywhere, the Mattress Factory serves as a research and development lab where artists from around the world receive unparalleled support to explore new ideas. Resulting installations have utilized such non-traditional materials as a trash bag full of human hair, running water, balloons, three tons of damp earth, and 6,000 cans of Budweiser!

The Mattress Factory's current expansion is energizing Pittsburgh's North Side by rehabilitating buildings as exhibition/education sites and artist housing to improve the neighborhood, encourage community access, and support artistic and education programs.

Located on Pittsburgh's North Side since 1977, the Mattress Factory is hailed as the best facility for installation art in the United States.

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is located in Schenley Park, within walking distance of the Pitt campus. Traveling east on Forbes Avenue, turn right onto Schenley Drive, turn left at the stop sign and continue to follow Schenley Drive into Schenley Park. Phipps is on the right.

Pittsburgh's thirteen-room "crystal palace" has served visitors for more than 100 years and is one of the largest and finest Victorian glasshouses in the country. The botanical gardens at Phipps feature lush tropical plants, palms, orchids, ferns, and desert plants, as well as many special flower shows, exhibits, and seasonal butterflies indoors.

Outdoor gardens and collections include the Discovery Garden, Japanese Courtyard Garden, Aquatic Gardens, bonsai, butterflies, perennials, annuals, and medicinal plants and herbs. With their ever-changing exhibits, they stay true to their motto: something’s always blooming at Phipps.

The History Center is housed in the former headquarters of the Chautauqua Lake Ice Company. The century-old building was renovated and opened in 1996 as the Senator John Heinz History Center, yet many of the building's original, sturdy structures remain. The History Center offers five floors of long-term and changing exhibits, including exhibits about the H.J. Heinz Co., Pittsburgh’s Glass History, and a journey through innovations from our region in the second floor's "Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation” exhibit.

The History Center is also home to the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, a state of the art museum-within-a-museum that captures the unforgettable and almost forgotten tales of Pittsburgh sports through hundreds of artifacts, more than 70 hands-on interactive exhibits, and 20 audio-visual programs.

The UAG is a space of exhibition for its permanent collection and works by Faculty and students of the Studio Arts Department. It also serves as a venue for traveling art exhibitions. Exhibitions presented in the UAG are related to the international and social missions of the University, as well as the teaching mission of the Department of History of Art and Architecture, involving as much as possible its students, both graduate and undergraduate.

The UAG owns a valuable art collection of works on paper, photographs, sculpture and paintings from various periods and cultures: Old Masters’ drawings from the 17th century; European prints, including an exceptionally large collection of prints by the French 17th-century printmaker Jacques Callot; modern prints by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Leon Golub; paintings by well-known American artists and Western Pennsylvania, including Gilbert Stuart, Rembrandt Peale, George Hetzel, Gertrude Quastler or Aaron Gorson; works form the Gimbel collection, with artists such as William Gropper, Joe Jones or Edward Millman, who represented industry and mill workers in Western Pennsylvania at the beginning of the 20th century; an Inuit collection; a collection of Japanese prints, Chinese scrolls and modern works by artists such as Tazuko Tanaka and Shiko Munakata.
