The mission of ARC at the University of Pittsburgh is to support local kindergarten through third grade students develop essential literacy/reading skills though thoughtfully crafted lesson plans in an effort to enhance student’s success in school. ARC tutors work one-on-one with students and act as mentors.
Become a tutor: ARC tutors are federal work study students AND volunteers who serve in local schools and after-school programs. To become a tutor you must serve 8-10 hours per week and commit to one year of service. Monthly trainings are provided so students can effectively tutor their children as well as reach personal and professional development goals.

Jumpstart advances equitable learning outcomes for young children in underserved communities by recruiting and supporting caring adults to deliver high-quality programming to children and drive systems change through teaching, advocacy, and leadership. University of Pittsburgh students serve preschool classrooms in the surrounding Pittsburgh neighborhoods in teams to build on children’s social-emotional and oral language learning.

- Creative Empowerment for Youth

Creative Empowerment for Youth is a volunteer group that mentors elementary school students with underfunded art programs. CEY has weekly sessions after school featuring an activity to promote creativity, self-expression, and foster positive relationships between students and their college mentors. Currently, we have weekly sessions with a group of 2nd – 5th grade students at Linden Elementary. We are hoping to expand to other schools as CEY grows.

Our DIY Service Project Kits are the perfect fit for your floor, club or group meetings! Each kit is available through the Office of PittServes with at least two weeks advance notice. Kits are available on a first come, first serve basis. Kits must be returned the next business day after your project date.
