Campus Connections: April 27
News & Announcements
Fitzgerald Field House will be closed to ordinary activity Monday, April 25, 2016 while the University of Pittsburgh’s Students for Bernie Sanders host a public event for the candidate.Expect traffic congestion on the upper campus. Parking lot E lot will be closed and Allequippa Street will be closed between Darragh Street and OC lot from early morning until the event concludes. University shuttles should be unaffected. For security reasons, items that spectators are allowed to bring are limited to small, personal necessities like keys and cell phones. No weapons, sharp objects, chairs, or signs or banners on sticks will be allowed. Entry is through doors nearest the intersection of Allequippa and Darragh Streets—other doors will be closed. Specific information about the event is available here. The University of Pittsburgh does not endorse or oppose any candidate for public office, but welcomes the opportunity to serve as a venue where candidates can express their views and opinions as part of the political process.
Today, Wednesday, April 13, 2016, a great deal of outside traffic around campus is expected, related to the appearance of a presidential candidate at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall.
The University has been told to expect that there will be, in particular, individuals coming to campus to express their viewpoints and to exercise their civil rights. We have been informed that there may be a group openly carrying firearms in a demonstration of their commitment to the Second Amendment.
Pennsylvania law allows open carry on public property. We expect that these demonstrators, if present, will abide by the law and remain off private property, which includes University of Pittsburgh campus areas. Local, Pitt, state and federal law enforcement will present throughout the duration of these activities.
Because of traffic and parking restrictions associated with this event, particularly in the vicinity of Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, and the likely influx of citizens wishing to be a part of this event, the ordinary progress of business on our campus may slow for a few hours.
Please accommodate students, staff and faculty who encounter difficulty getting to class and to other activities in a timely manner. We have been informed that the entrance and exit to the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall parking garage will intermittently close for short periods of time after 5 p.m. Please plan accordingly.
We are confident that all of our community will act in accordance with the law and exercise mutual respect and a concern for others.
