Virtual Career Center: Frequently Asked Questions

Given the local, state, and federal guidelines regarding community response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pitt’s Career Center will be operating virtually. Our staff members are working remotely and are eager to connect with you.  Please schedule an appointment in Handshake, call us at 412-383-4473, or email careers@pitt.edu too reach us.  And of course, please also continue to practice social distancing and take care of your health and well-being.  Below is a list of frequently asked questions to help you determine how the Career Center can best assist you.

CURRENT UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

How will the Career Center continue to help Pitt students?

Effective immediately, the Career Center will provide uninterrupted, virtual service.  Staff will continue to be available via email, phone and Zoom appointments.  Staff are working remotely during normal business hours of 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m.; please review the information below for details about our services.

Résumé and Cover Letter Assistance:

If you need assistance with résumé or cover letter editing, please email resumes@pitt.edu and include a Microsoft Word attachment of your document.  A member of our staff will respond with feedback within two business days.

Career Consultant Availability:

Our staff of Career Consultants is here to provide you with personalized, major-specific advice on topics such as choosing a major, job searching, graduate school applications, interview prep, salary negotiation, and more.  A list of consultants by portfolio can be found here. Internship/Summer Job Planning:

SCHEDULING APPOINTMENTS IN HANDSHAKE

  • Visit pitt.joinhandshake.com
  • If this is your first time on Handshake, you will be directed to agree to the website’s terms and complete a quick survey of your career interests. This will allow Handshake to populate your home page with jobs and internships that are tailored to your preferences that you may find useful.
  • Under the Career Center tab in the upper right corner, click on “Appointments” and then “Schedule a New Appointment”. Choose your field of interest, your consultant and a time that is convenient for you.  Be sure to include your phone number in your reason for meeting.  You will receive a notification when your appointment has been approved, and your consultant will follow up with specific instructions about your appointment.
  • In order to view jobs and internships posted by employers, you will be directed to accept our policies via a survey link.  Upon completion, full access to employer posts is granted within a few minutes.

I’m graduating this semester and need help finding a job after graduation. What do I do?
